In Korea, October is traditionally cherished as the season of Cheongomabi—a time of clear, high autumn skies when the mind is enriched through the joy of reading. In this beautiful season, as we turn the pages of a book, we enjoy the romance of stepping beyond time and space to meet diverse individuals, engage in dialogue, and contemplate deeply. This is because literature serves as a mirror reflecting a society's long-standing history and philosophy, and stands as the most profound forum for dialogue, connecting us through universal human emotions across borders and generations.

 

In October 2025, the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia officially designated every October as "Korean Heritage Month." It brings me immense joy to see this milestone, as it beautifully demonstrates that Korean culture has established itself as a proud and integral pillar within Canada’s rich multicultural society.

 

To commemorate this meaningful occasion, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea is proud to host the inaugural Korean Book Week at Granville Island, the cultural heart of Vancouver. This year, we have curated a diverse range of programs—including a graphic novel exhibition that visually captures Korea’s history and life, insightful book talks with invited authors, and engaging book clubs—creating a welcoming space where Vancouver residents can come together and discover the profound grace of Korean culture.

 

I sincerely hope that this event will provide a wonderful opportunity to look beyond the dynamism and creativity of Hallyu, and instead discover the true, intrinsic beauty of Korean literature and art.
